The Essential Difference Between Deference And Respect


This is a timely Reality Check and Self-Awareness Check for all the managers and leaders out there.

When people say they respect your opinion…they may do.

But chances are what they’re really respecting is your right to have that opinion.

When subordinates say they respect your authority…they may do.

But chances are what they respect is that the ‘system’ has decided to put you in a position of authority.

Even if they don’t respect you…they will do as you say because they will defer to the position of authority that you hold.

Respect is hard-earned.

Deference comes from something that is bestowed up on you. Like authority.

That’s how I see it.
